O.K. Ready for ZoraContext
The work is a tribute to Feren's daughter, Zora.
From documentation in the accession record at 2001.1:
"'OK, Ready for Zora,' is a large mosaic sculpture created by the award-winning Madison artist, Steven Feren. Mr. Feren is a professor in the art department of the University of Wisconsin in Madison.
The work features a kneeling horse with a man sitting astride him. On the man's shoulders rides a little girl, pointing into the distance. Surrounding the horse are small animals, all mounted on a mosaic platform.
The mosaic tiles were imported from Japan specifically for their delicate colors. Mr. Feren provides insight into the work with his own words:
'The intent of this piece is one of hope, lineage, community, responsibility and the affirmation that one can find peace with one's own place in the world.
In sculpture, the child points the way, the torch is passed, the horse and animals represent the natural world--or events not under our control. The horse itself is at rest and the animals have gathered close by, which represents coming to terms with the human condition.'
The artist was influenced by mosaic works he saw in Spain, blended with the American tradition of folk art."Collection
