The World in a Book

Context

From The Booktruck (Feb-March, 1980): "How can you best honor and treasure the memory of a good friend whose sudden, unexpected death has shocked you? The friends of Jean Matters Madison got together and came up with what they felt was a most appropriate tribute: an original sculpture to be placed in East Library. The result "The World in a Book," depicting a young reader engrossed in a book, was formally accepted by City Librarian Henry E. Bates, Jr. in ceremonies at East Library Feb. 2. East Librarian Bill Beaudot had it placed on a low platform - the children's collection catalog file - so it would be low enough for the younger patrons to enjoy. 'It's terra cotta and supposed to be touched and felt by the children,' said the sculptor, Jeune Wussow of Wautwaosa. She wanted a subject that children would relate to quickly and so chose to depict a child reading. Mrs. Wussow is a widely known artist who has exhibited in many places, including the Charles Allis Art Library, the Performing Arts Center and the Marine Bank. She is vice-president of Wisconsin Painters and Sculptors ... The gift was most appropriate because Mrs. Madison and her children spent a good deal of time at East Library..."
