Rough transcription of artist's notes on right side (see attached detail photos): "The idea for this came from watching the chunks of ice flowing down the Milwaukee River, from the corridor of the lunch room [?]. I wondered if heavy, dark forms could be made to appear on an equal plane. The same surface, the hunks of white. The warms and cools of the grays conflict and defy the depth that the warmness or coldness defines of them. There are many factors. working in this that I must resolve in the next drawing. 1. What shapes can be read as either figure or ground [shape] = figure? [shape] = neg space? [shape] = slight convex ???? as figure although it is enclosed? [shape] = incomplete convex will be read as ground. 2. No I want an illusion of depth through diff. of shape (fourth ???? = smaller) and through overlapping of shapes. Use of warmer and cooler colors which come forward, and receed [sic]. - or - do I want to manipulate these factors to defy depth? a) use warm greys in deeper depth b) break [?] patterns of shapes which represent a certain level? c) large shapes on bottom smaller shapes on surface?"
