Notes

7/2/1950 MJ, "Louis Mayer's Summer with Dr. Schweitzer." From the article: "Louis Mayer, New York, a painter and a sculptor of note, who was the first president of the Society of Milwaukee Artists, which became the Wisconsin Painters and Sculptors' society of today [Wisconsin Visual Artists], has ogne to Europe. In Kaysersberg Upper Alsace he will make a bust of the famous Dr. Albert Schweitzer. Mayer is now in his 81st year. Last summer, he made a portrait relief of Schweitzer [this work], copies of which have been sold for the benefit of the Schweitzer hospital at Lambarene in French Equatorial Africa [...] Louis Mayer is as certainly an original character as Dr. Schweitzer [...] Acquaintance with Schweitzer came about through mutual interest in music. It has ripened into a warm friendship." From correspondence from the artist to MPL dated 3/29/1955 (see accession record at 1955.1): The "portrait reliefs [of Schweitzer are] exactly life-size, which has received full approval, not only by Schweitzer himself (inscribing his name in the plasteline model, shown clearly in the bronze and iron reproductions) but has been favored by high comment wherever it has been shown. An iron cast of it hangs in the official residence of President Heuss, at Bonn, and several have been donated to schools in Germany named 'Albert Schweitzer Schule.' Bronzes in severel German churches. It was the only portrait exhibited at the 'Pauli Kirche' at Frankfurt when he received the Peace award by the German Publishers."
