(from 2014.Old Walks and New) Avis Chitwood, American (Kansas), 1894-1994 Terrace des Italian, c. 1942, etching Traveling in Europe and seeing picturesque, old buildings caused Mrs. Jesse W. Brock to model her home in Leavenworth, KS, after an Italian castle. Called the Terrace des Italian, it was built between 1865-1869. Chitwood studied etching at Washburn with Mary Huntoon, whose Kansas Landscape is in the exhibition. She later taught etching at Washburn in the 1930s. Chitwood documented other older buildings in Kansas, including several on Washburn’s campus that were destroyed in the 1966 tornado.
