Boris Gorelick
American, 1912-1984
Discarded, 1935
lithograph
This print was made for the Works Progress Administration’s Federal Art Project, a Depression-era relief program for unemployed artists. Gorelick was a Communist, and many of his works protest the living conditions of the working class. Here he makes a visual analogy between the discarded machine parts and the scrap metal collectors, who have been “discarded” by the capitalist system.
