Label from 2014.Art for Social Change: The women in this image may be fleeing from General Francisco Franco's fascist forces during the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939), or they may be Jews leaving Germany after Hitler came to power in 1933. One source suggests that the artist purposefully left their identities vague in order to evoke sympathy for both groups. Although anti-fascist groups pressed for allowing more refugees into the country, the then very restrictive refugee quotas remained in place. La More worked for the New York branch of the WPA/FAP from 1937 through 1939. Possibly a Communist, he served on the National Coordinating Committee of the Artists' Union. He was also a member of the American Artists' Congress.
