2024 post:
Throughout 2024, we're looking back at the 100 year history of art at the Mulvane. This sculpture, a 1937 gift of the artist, depicts poet Walt Whitman. Robert Merrell Gage may have chosen to carve the likeness out of redwood because of Whitman’s poem “Song of the Redwood Tree” in "Leaves of Grass." Gage's handling of the wood gives Whitman a roughhewn, seasoned appearance.
