Robert Sudlow, American (Kansas), 1920-2010
Bridge at Calico Rock, 1990, oil on canvas
While Robert Sudlow is known largely as a painter of Douglas, Chase, and Wabunsee counties in Kansas, here he shows a riverside path near Calico Rock, AR. Like the Impressionists, to whom he is often compared, Sudlow paints outdoors in front of his subjects. His loose brushstrokes and heightened color also recall those French artists. See, for example, the purples, peaches, blues and greens in the water. Unlike the Impressionists, however, Sudlow does not try to capture a single moment in time, but communicates the mood of the landscape over the time that he is painting it.
