Ernest Fiene, American, 1894-1966
Brooklyn Bridge, 1929, lithograph
Fiene, like Samuel Halpert, frequently depicted well-known New York sights, like the Empire State Building and the Brooklyn Bridge. Though completed in 1883, the Brooklyn Bridge was considered a wonder of American engineering know-how and a symbol of modern progress. Curiously, Fiene created this image from memory while in Paris in 1928-29. The rapidly receding perspective and the diagonal lines of the steel cables give this stable structure a dynamic quality.
