With his photo of the 1956-1957 Chevrolet Bel-Air. Josh Mishler, 2005 winner of Washburn Art Department’s Charles and Margaret Pollak Award, brings America’s mid-twentieth-century’s fascination with hot cars into the twenty-first century. Known for its exaggerated tail fins, the Bel Air is favorite of classic car buffs. Mishler’s interest in cars came naturally; in a 2005 interview, he noted, “I’ve grown up my entire life in a family just infatuated with cars.” Since he was a fan of fins, he named his work Finatical. While still a student at Washburn, Mishler started his career as an automotive photographer.
