(from 2014.Old Walks and New) Charles Daubigny, French, 1817-1878, The Mill, 1848, etching and roulette Henri Harpignes, French, 1819-1916, Landscapes, published posthumously in 1917, drypoint Daubigny and Harpignes were part of the Barbizon School, a group of artists who worked in the French village of Barbizon and the nearby Forest of Fontainebleau. Daubigny’s long path zigzagging into the distance implies the distances walked by these artists as the enjoyed nature and sought for subjects for their art works. Harpignies’ images of tiny figures among large trees reflect the majesty the Barbizon artists found in nature, as well as the contemplative musings that it could provoke.
