2024 post: Throughout 2024, we're looking back at the 100 year history of art at the Mulvane. Chemehuevi photographer Cara Romero’s 2019 portrait depicts Amber Morningstar Byars, a Choctaw sculptor and activist. Byars is styled like a doll in a box, but unlike mass-produced toys, she is surrounded by objects she chose to represent her personal and cultural identity. The work's decorative border draws from Byars' tribal vernacular– the Choctaw traditionally wear black and red fabric sashes decorated with white beads.
