A Little Mind Changing
Untitled (Basketball Player)
Reynolds’ works stress the tensions generated by desegregation. In Untitled, a white coach wants the basketball player to come to his white school. A cheerleader tries to hold him in the black school. All the black school can afford is one pom-pom that lies on the ground.
In Opposites Attract, a biracial person is pulled and pushed by the four people. The black man tries to pull the white side of the center person in, whereas the black lady wants to push out both halves of this person. On the other side the white lady tries to pull the black side of the man in, while the white man holds his hand and punches him in the jaw.
In A Little Mind Changing, a white woman has decided to move to a black school. This is symbolized by the suitcases, which also refer to her emotional and intellectual baggage. She is having second thoughts, however, and clings to her computer as a black woman pulls her away.
