2024, “Endangered Art: Reclaiming a Legacy”
Eggs was among several paintings by Topeka artist Clarisse Madeleine Laurent that were displayed at the 1904 Louisiana Purchase Exposition. Like many of Laurent’s works, it demonstrates careful attention to detail and skillful paint handling, resulting in the polished, illusionistic rendering of this still life.
During treatment, conservation specialists stabilized Eggs by removing it from twisted stretcher bars, cleaning it, and in-painting areas of paint loss with reversible pigment. It was placed in a newly acquired, period-appropriate frame.Label

Art Up Close: This breakfast still life is by Topeka artist Clarisse Laurent, who lived in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Using very fine, polished brushwork, she created an illusionistic rendering of various textures, from the velvety surface of egg shells to the wet shine of yolks.
