2023, "Endangered Art Conserved" Claude Buck was an American artist known for his works that draw from classical mythology, religious stories, and the literature of writers like Edgar Allen Poe. A year before painting The Toilers, Buck founded the Introspectives, a movement of artists who created poetic, dream-like imagery. Conservators cleaned The Toilers and then inpainted areas of minor paint loss. They applied a barrier coat of resin and followed it with varnish. Next, they removed gold overpaint residue from the frame and filled in minor losses with calcium carbonate. They finished by applying a gilt varnish and polishing the frame with gilt cream.
