2024 post: On the last day of 2024, we're finishing our year-long look at 100 years of art at the Mulvane. "Rural Rising" was created by Kansas artist Justin Marable to celebrate the Mulvane's centennial. He evokes the museum's century of life using imagery of a historic stone barn standing strong. Overhead, birds and twinkling stars in a sky of shifting colors create an atmosphere of wonder.

"Perspectives from the Plains," 2025 This work says a lot about Kansas and its history. The first thing I noticed is the sunset in the background. Kansas has some of the prettiest sunsets in the country. But the sunset does more than that—it creates the visual of calmness in the plains. Another interesting part of this work is the single stone barn that appears to be old and run down. The barn screams Kansas to me. It shows the endurance and tradition that is so strong in this state. Lastly, the birds bring movement into the picture while also expressing the freedom of the Kansas landscape. This work makes me feel peaceful and reminds me of my childhood growing up in the plains of Kansas. It is both nostalgic and calming for me. --Rebecca Snyder, WU student
