Gavin Heath has been creating his "tribal doll" or "Afro doll" blown glass sculptures since the early 1990s. He incorporates designs painted with glass emulsion (pulverized glass mixed with oils) on the work's surface and within its glass layers. The sculptures' form is influenced by the art of the Ndebele people of South Africa, as well as Italian glass artist Luciano Vistosi. They evoke ancient African goddesses and related figures.
