This remarkably sensitive self-portrait stands as a testament to Alex Tillotson's abilities as a draftsman. Confronting the viewer directly, the subject (the artist himself) is represented with unsparing honesty. Tillotson was a professor of Art and chair of the Art Department at Washburn from 1945 to 1964. He served during this period as director of the Mulvane and was responsible for suggesting the organization of a friends organization to support museum programs. As a result of his suggestion, the Mulvane Art Center, Inc. (later the Friends of the Mulvane Art Museum, Inc.) was organized in 1954.
