2024, “Endangered Art: Reclaiming a Legacy”
Frederick Judd Waugh came from a family of artists: his father was a portraitist, and his mother painted miniatures. He became well-known for his seascapes, which won the Popular Prize at the Carnegie International Exhibition five years in a row.
Conservation specialists cleaned soot and yellowed varnish from the surface of Incoming Tide. They stabilized lifting, tenting, and cupping paint, and then in-painted losses with conservation-grade pigments. The painting was given a new coat of protective varnish, and then it was installed into its newly cleaned and polished frame.
