2022, Echoes of the Classical World Jacques Villon was a French artist who worked on everything from newspaper illustrations to cubist work. Lycoris et Gallus is a lithograph representing a more illustrative design. Gallus was a famous politician and poet in Ancient Rome who wrote love poetry. Lycoris (or Cytheris) was a Greek courtesan in Ancient Rome about whom Gallus wrote his love poetry. These poems played an important role in the foundation of love and erotic elegy in Ancient Rome. Lycoris et Gallus features columns, and statues molded into their environment flowing through the colors of the floor. These showcase a romanticized room as reminiscent of their relationship.
