Albert Bloch was born in St. Louis, trained at Washington University, and worked sporadically as an illustrator before moving to Munich in 1908. Bloch became acquainted with Franz Marc and Wassily Kandinsky, who together invited him to show his works alongside theirs in the first and second Blaue Reiter exhibitions in 1911 and 1913. In Munich Bloch also befriended the writers Karl Krauss and Georg Trakl, as well the artists Paul Klee and Lionel Feininger. Between 1914 and 1917, Bloch's work was shown in single and group exhibitions in Berlin, Dresden, Hamberg, Basel, Munich, Chicago, and St. Louis. Bloch returned to the United States in 1921, taught at the Chicago Art Institute for two years, and joined the University of Kansas faculty in 1923. He taught drawing and painting at the university until his retirement in 1947.
