2025 "Endangered Art: Reclaiming a Legacy"
Julian Rix worked on both coasts of the United States as a painter and illustrator of landscapes and marine scenes. He was considered an early Tonalist, a landscape movement that emphasized atmosphere, mood, and shadow.
A previous unknown restorer had left a noticeable patch on Clouded Meadows, and the work had extensive crackling and paint losses. After ultraviolet light examination and cleaning, conservators cooled the painting under pressure and then heated it on a vacuum suction table to relax and fuse cracks. It was given a new linen backing for structural support, and the stretcher bars were squared up. Conservators filled in paint losses and gave the work a new protective varnish.
