Norma Sklarek was the first Black woman to become a licensed architect in the United States. She was also the first Black woman to become a member of the American Institute of Architects. Projects to her credit include San Bernardino City Hall, the United States Embassy in Tokyo, and Terminal One at the Los Angeles International Airport. Sklarek was a principal in the firm Siegel-Sklarek-Diamond and then the Jerde Partnership, Inc. In 2008, she was honored with the Whitney Young Jr. Service Award for Social Action by the American Institute of Architects.
