In the 1940s and 50s, a talent for jazz led Ernestine Anderson to sing and tour with big bands, including those of Johnny Otis, Russell Jacquet, and Lionel Hampton. Her unique style of jazz combined sophisticated phrasing with a sensitivity to blues and gospel. Four times nominated for a Grammy award, she traveled frequently from her home in Seattle to perform in Europe and Japan, and she gave many benefit performances in aid of medical research.
