In 1969, Mother Hale opened the doors of her home in Harlem to create Hale House, which provided a life-saving environment for the infants of young drug-addicted mothers. Mother Hale and her daughter, Dr. Lorraine Hale, helped over 1000 children return to health and to their rehabilitated parents. In 1985, President Reagan called her an American hero. She was honored with the Candace Award for Humanitarianism by the National Coalition of 100 Black Women in 1990.
