Prolific, innovative, and controversial, Sonia Sanchez has written poetry, short stories, plays, and children’s books. Her publications include We a BaddDDD People (1970), A Blues Book for a Blue Black Magic Woman (1974), and Homegirls and Handgrenades (1985), the last of which received the American Book Award. Throughout her career, Sanchez taught at San Francisco State University, Amherst College, and Temple University, where she was the first Presidential Fellow. She has earned many distinguished honors, including the Pennsylvania Governor’s Award for Humanities, the PEN Writing Award, and the Harper Lee Award.
