In 1967, Georgia Powers became the first woman and the first Black person to be elected to the Kentucky State Senate. During her five four-year terms, she pressed for legislation on public accommodations, fair employment, open housing, and other issues of special concern to women, children, and the poor. She was an active participant in several historic demonstrations and was one of the organizers of the Kentucky affiliate of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. After her retirement from political office in 1988, she continued to advocate for vulnerable populations as a community organizer and activist.
