In the early 1940s, Daisy Bates and her husband L.C. Bates established the Arkansas State Press, a weekly newspaper that foregrounded stories about civil rights and the achievements of Black Arkansans. Elected president of the Arkansas NAACP, she led the historic fight of the Little Rock Nine to desegregate Central High School in 1957. Her book The Long Shadow of Little Rock (1962) won a 1988 National Book Award.
