Miss Ruby taught in a one-room schoolhouse on Pawleys Island, South Carolina, for 60 years. When she began in 1938, it was the only local school open to Black children. She summoned her students, who ranged from preschoolers to fourth graders, with an old-fashioned brass handbell, a gift from her first class. Her school, The Holy Cross-Faith Memorial School, was supported by the Episcopal Church and maintained by the students’ parents, many of whom were alumni themselves. She received four honorary doctorates.
