After the 1965 assassination of her husband Malcom X (El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz), Betty Shabazz pursued higher education in order to support her six children. She earned a master’s degree in health administration and a doctorate in curriculum development and higher education administration from the University of Massachusetts Amherst. She worked as an associate professor of health sciences at Medgar Evers College of the City University of New York, and later became Director of Institutional Advancement and Public Affairs. She also hosted “A Forum for Women,” a radio program in New York City.
