2024, “Endangered Art: Reclaiming a Legacy” John F. Carlson is best known for his landscape paintings of upstate New York. He was the founder of the John F. Carlson School of Landscape Painting and the author of Elementary Principles of Landscape Painting, a technical treatise for students. Frosty Morning exemplifies the winter paintings for which Carlson is best known. Over the past century, the painting’s varnish yellowed, disfiguring Carlson’s cool palette. Conservation treatment included an overall surface clean, varnish replacement, and overpaint removal from a previous restoration. Specialists also restored damaged areas of the frame’s ornament.
