Mary Huntoon, American (Kansas), 1896-1970
Kansas Landscape, 1936-37, etching and sand ground etching
Around 1936, Mary Huntoon was hired to direct the Kansas Federal Art Project, part of President Roosevelt’s Works Progress Administration. This print was done at that time. In etching the artist marks a metal plate with a sharp tool. This medium is perfect to capture the scratchy roadside grasses and barren trees of Dust Bowl Kansas. A native Topekan, Huntoon studied at Washburn College with George Stone and at the National Academy of Design with master etcher Joseph Pennell, both of whom are represented in this exhibition. Huntoon taught art at Washburn College at various times during the 1930s.
