etching
In the mid-1920s, Chagall illustrated Russian author Nikolai Gogol’s Dead Souls, 1842. In this scene Madame Korobotchka gathers bed linens for some unexpected guests.Label
In 1923, Ambroise Vollard asked Chagall to illustrate one of the greatest novels in the Russian language, Dead souls, by Gogol. Chagall worked on the project from 1923-1927, finally making ninety-six etchings for the book. This particular etching features Madame Korbotchka pleading to God with her hands turned upward. One source suggested that she has 'extravagantly mixed emotions as she provides pillows for her unexpected guests."
