Robert Stackhouse's career has taken him to many places in the eastern half of the United States. He was born in Bronxville, New York in 1942 and studied at the University of South Florida and the University of Maryland. He has worked for the pat several years in Missouri. Known for both his sculpture and two-dimensional work, Stackhouse creates works fo great power and expressiveness. This lithograph, made during his recent work with Michael Sims at the Lawrence Lithography Workshop, takes as its subject an image which appears frequently in Stackhouse's painting and sculpture: a brilliant red serpent, called "Ruby" by Stackhouse. Sometimes coiled, sometimes extended out to its greatest length, the serpent appears alone and in combination with skeletal structures that recall buildings, boats, or animal skeletons. The rich coloration of the print is the result of seven separate red inks which were used to print it. The drips of highly saturated color remind us that we are looking at a drawing of a serpent, rather than the real thing.
