2023, "Endangered Art Conserved" Carleton Wiggins, a painter known for his pastoral landscapes, attended the National Academy of Design and was taught by renowned Tonalist artist George Inness. He also studied plein air (outdoor) painting in France, where he was particularly influenced by the Barbizon School, a group of 19th-century French Realists. Conservators cleaned the surface of this painting, and then filled paint losses with a calcium carbonate compound. They inpainted these areas with conservation pigments, and applied a new coat of varnish to the surface. Broken frame ornaments were recast in plaster and then gilded to match the surrounding areas.

2024, “Endangered Art: Reclaiming a Legacy” Carleton Wiggins attended the National Academy of Design and was taught by renowned Tonalist George Inness. He also studied plein-air (outdoor) painting in France, where he was particularly influenced by the Barbizon School, a group of 19th-century French Realists. This painting is typical of the bucolic scenes he was known for. Later, he became an early member of the Old Lyme Art Colony, an artist group that helped shape the development of American Impressionism. Conservators cleaned the surface of this work and then filled paint losses with a calcium carbonate compound. They in-painted these areas and applied a new coat of varnish.
