Lester A. Gillette, American (Kansas), 1853-1940
Street in Gloucester, c. 1928-1939, oil on canvas
Having run a coal and lumber dealership in Topeka for twenty-five years, Lester Gillette retired in 1924 to pursue painting, his life-long passion. In 1928 he moved to Gloucester, MA, and lived there until 1938 when he returned to Topeka. This painting was most likely done during that decade. Its contrasting complementary colors of red/green and purple/yellow create a vivid and intense work of art, betraying the influence of such Post-Impressionists as Paul Gauguin and Vincent Van Gogh.
