Born in Chase, KS, Seward studied at Washburn University for one semester and at Bethany College with Birger Sandzén.
In 1907 he settled in Wichita where he worked as a commercial artist. In 1923 he became the art director at Western Lithographic Company, which printed many works by Prairie Print Makers. Seward was one of the founders of that organization and a major promoter of printmaking in Kansas.
