After an early art career in Milwaukee, WI, Tillotson came to Topeka in 1945 to chair Washburn University's art department and run the Mulvane Art Museum. Apart form his many portraits, little is known about his work. According to the 1954 Topeka Daily Capital, "Tillotson paints with a nostalgic approach to the semirural, semi-industrial town that reveals the character of the people." This statement may apply to this depiction of a person walking through a ramshackle neighborhood near the tracks on the edge of town. The woodcut medium gives this print a rough quality, appropriate for its subject.
