Seen in many works by Utagawa Hiroshige and his contemporaries, the distinctive blue gradient called bokashi (ぼかし) is characteristic of the Edo period. Bokashi is a printing technique that uses water and pigment to create subtle blends and transitions either between multiple colors or between pigment and water. Both styles of bokashi can be seen in The Satta Pass at Yui, 16th Station. This technique is used to create openness and distance in the print as well as to expand the usage of color in the work without requiring the printmaker to create more blocks.
