The British War Office employed him to design recruiting posters and illustrate the Army and Navy Gazette. He painted many watercolours of British Army uniforms. His work on posters polished his ability to create eye-catching images. This led to him contributing illustrations to the Boy's Own Magazine, The Graphic and others. Today, his pictures can be seen in numerous regimental museums and his illustrations appear in regimental histories, while watercolours frequently come up for auction.
