Sergeant Henry Thomas Sheppard went from a district court martial to earning his freedom and an honourable discharge through good conduct serving with our 87th Battalion CEF (CGG).
Originally born in 1891 in Montreal, 526710 Sergeant Sheppard enlisted with the 163rd Battalion and was shipped to the UK. Re-assigned to the C.A.M.C., He was rapidly promoted in 1916 to the rank of Sergeant before being subject to a District Court Martial by the Famous Major General Sir Sam Steele on February 22nd, 1918, for allowing a prisoner to escape (14 months punishment.)
Sergeant Sheppard's sentence was granted remission when he was offered (and accepted) to join our 87th during the last 100 days. He distinguished himself during that time and was granted clemency and an honourable discharge. He returned to Montreal to rejoin his wife and two daughters and survived until 1950. His resting place is Cimetière Mont-Royal.Created By
