Description

"Sunset Ceremony" presented to The Canadian Grenadier Guards in 1927 by H.R.H. The Prince of Wales (Future King Edward VIII) and painted by British artist Joseph Edward Homerville Hague. 1927 ROYAL VISIT TO CGG HOME STATION / PRESENTATION OF THE PAINTING: Edward, Prince of Wales, along with his brother, Prince George (Future King George VI) visited Canada for the Diamond Jubilee of the Confederation. Edward joined the Grenadier Guards in June 1914. He volunteered for active service on the outbreak of the First World War in August but was instead made staff officer to Sir John French, Commander-in-Chief of the British Expeditionary Force. Edward chaired the Patriotic Fund for the care of soldiers and sailors and visited troops from the British Empire and Dominions, including Canada. Edward was with the Canadian Corps when the armistice was signed in 1918 and wrote to a friend of his admiration for the Canadian troops, “living amongst them makes me just long to go there.” KING EDWARD VIII & THE VIMY MEMORIAL On 26 July 1936, Edward VIII unveiled the Canadian National Vimy Memorial in France. The ceremony was attended by more than 100,000 people. The king met with dignitaries and mingled with the crowds, stopping to speak with veterans and with widows and mothers of servicemen who had died during the war. He then made a brief speech before unveiling the memorial. ABOUT THE ARTIST: Joseph Edward Homerville Hague was a British artist who specialized in exterior views of buildings and park scenes and was presumably influenced by the Post-Impressionist movement and painting "en plein air". He exhibited terracotta reliefs at the Royal Academy from 1885-90; and, from 1895 onwards, paintings. He has several paintings with Royal Collection Trust (UK) with his most well-known oil on canvas painting being "Engine Court, St James's Palace" c.1884-1920
