PENMAN WINNER OF GRAND AGGREGATE Took Ferguson Gold Challenge Medal, D.C.R.A. Medal, and other Trophies GUARDS' ANNUAL SHOOT Staff Sergt. Stelfox Won Bronze Medal——Close Competitions at Pointe Aux Trembles
At the annual shoot of the Canadian Grenadier Guards Rifle Association yesterday at the Pointe aux Trembles Ranges, Corporal Penman, of the Guards, easily proved himself the best shot, winning the Ferguson Gold Medal, the Grand Aggregate and the Regimental Silver Medal, with a number of other trophies and cash prizes, his aggregate score being 171, lead of five points over his nearest competitor, Staff Sergeant Stelfox. who came second in the grand aggregate, with a score of 166, and took the Bronze Medal, Guardsman Sutton coming third, with 163. Cpl. Penman shot steadily during the day, coming out well ahead in all the matches for which he was entered.
There was a large entry for the matches, about 75 marksmen registering, including a number from the Victoria, Rifles, Highlanders and other regiments, who had entered for the open events. In the open contents the 'Vics' (3rd Regt VRC) came out well, taking a number of the prizes, while the High Landers did well, and several unattached marksmen won places in the prize list.
Owing to the number of other attractions there was not much of an attendance at the matches. Few being present outside the competitors and the range officials. Bad weather was experienced for the various competitions, the weather changing frequently from rain to shine, while the light was generally poor, the low visibility and occasional rain accounting for comparatively poor scoring, especially among the tyros. The more experienced men generally shot steadily considering the conditions.
The executive range officer for the matches was Major A. H. Cowie, assisted by Staff Sergt. J. C. Stelfox and Quartermaster Sergeant A. E. Roebuck, (The Honorary Secretary of the C.G.G RA).

ABOUT THE CGG SOLDIER
CSM Mathew Penman, born in Dunston, England, immigrated to Canada in 1913 and joined the 1st Regiment Canadian Grenadier Guards (CGG). During World War I, he was among the 387 CGG members who volunteered to serve in the 14th Battalion (Royal Montréal Regiment) of the Canadian Expeditionary Force (CEF). Rising to the rank of Corporal, he was wounded in 1916 and later transferred to Canadian Division Headquarters, where he served as an Armourer-Sergeant, specializing in the repair of CEF bicycles. Upon his return to Canada in 1919, Penman was awarded the CEF Class A War Badge #399036 and rejoined CGG. He went on to become a highly successful competitive shooter from 1923-1963, earning the title of Québec Rifle Association Champion for eight consecutive years, from 1930 to 1938. Additionally, he won the prestigious CGG Pepler Challenge Cup twice. CSM Penman retired from active military service in 1958 as a Company Sergeant Major (CSM) but remained deeply involved with the CGG Veterans Association. Tragically, Mathew Penman passed away in 1974 while playing billiards in the CGG Sergeants Mess. His legacy as a dedicated soldier, skilled marksman, and committed veteran lives on in CGGs SGT’s Mess to this day.Created By
