1953 - LIEUTENANT ARLINGTON H. 'BUD' McKEAGE (1924-2003)
CANADA CHAMION BEST SHOT (CAF) - CGG's ONLY THE QUEENS MEDAL RECIPIENT
Lieutenant Arlington 'Bud' McKeage was the first CGG recipient in 1953 of The Queens Medal for Canada Best Shot of Military Forces. Lt. Arthur H. McKeage (1924-2003) was born in Compton, Quebec (Eastern Townships) in 1924 and was the son of CGG WWI 87th Battalion (Canadian Grenadier Guards) CEF veteran 177087 Sgt Alexander Burns McKeage, MID (1892-1971) who was severely wounded with the loss of his left eye in action on 2 September 1918.
In 1917, Sgt Alexander Burns McKeage was appointed a Staff Instructor for the BEF/CEF Officers Training Course (OTC) in Bexhill, UK, and was mentioned in Sir Douglas Haig's Despatches (MID) for gallant service and his devotion to duty.
In 1953, his son, Lieutenant Arlington 'Bud' McKeage became CGG's first and only The Queen's Medal for Best Shot in The Canadian Army. There is high probability that his father was at the event supporting his son.
THE QUEEN's MEDAL (CANADA BEST SHOT):
The Medal for the Best Shot in the British/ Canadian Army, Infantry, was instituted by Queen Victoria in 1869 and was awarded annually from 1870 to 1882 to the best shot of the Infantry of the British Army, including the Royal Engineers and the Colonial Corps. In 1923, the medal was re-introduced by King George V and designated the King's Medal for Champion Shots in the Military Forces. It could now be awarded to the champions of Army marksmanship competitions, held under battle conditions at annual central meetings in the United Kingdom, the British Dominions, Colonies and India. Early participating countries were Australia, Canada, India, New Zealand, South Africa and Southern Rhodesia.
1953 - Original Montreal Star newspaper article reporting on CGG Lieutenant Arthur McKeage (Son of 87th Bn WWI veteran Pte McKeahge) who won the Queen's Gold Medal at the 85th annual Dominion of Canada Rifle Association Shoot Competition at Connaught Ranges in Ottawa, Ontario. This article clipping was part of the collection attributed to CSM (WO2 Matthew Penman and shows his connection and dedication to the CGG Competitive Shooting Team members in the 1950's after his retirement. Possible that he was a trainer or coach of the CGG Shooting team at the time.Created By
