Description

1977 - An early New France era Thibeault style rapier sword presented by The Royal Canadian Air Cadets Squadron 555 to CGG Lieutenant-Colonel Commanding T. Kenneth Quinn, CD, ADC, Officers, and Rank of The Canadian Grenadier Guards on the occasion of their 25th Annual inspection. CONDITION: the sword apprears to be an original late 1600's - early 1700's rapier with no evident makers marks or engravings. The blade, hilt, and quillons appear original, however the grip has been rebound. A modern (1977) anodized aluminum plaque has been fastened to the lower part of the blade. ABOUT THE THIBEAULT RAPIER: Gérard (or Girard) Thibault of Antwerp (ca. 1574–1627) was a fencing master and writer of the 1628 rapier manual Academie de l'Espée. Thibault was Belgium. His manual is one of the most detailed and elaborate sources on rapier combat. Thibault's ideal hilt is relatively simple. It features straight quillons as well as finger rings and side rings with little else. Thibault gives proportional measurements for the various components of the hilt, each based on a circle diagram.
