Description

Major William Graham Lord Shaughnessy, CD (1922-2003) was the 3rd Baron of Shaughnessy and Grandson to Thomas Shaughnessy, 1st Baron Shaughnessy. He was an Officer of the Canadian Grenadier Guards and 2nd Squadron Commander of the 22nd Canadian Armoured Regiment (CGG) during WW2. He was one of 17 CGG soldiers to have been awarded Mentioned in Dispatches (MID) during WW2. Major Lord Shaughnessy was born at Montreal and educated at Bishop's College School, Lennoxville. He served with distinction as a Major with the Canadian Grenadier Guards at the beaches in Normandy during World War II. He then took a degree in Journalism at Columbia University, New York. He was Executive Assistant to the Canadian Minister of Finance and President of the Royal Commonwealth Society at Montreal. Baron Shaughnessy, of the City of Montreal in the Dominion of Canada and of Ashford in the County of Limerick, is a title in the Peerage of the United Kingdom. It was created in 1916 for the Milwaukee born businessman Thomas Shaughnessy, president of the Canadian Pacific Railway Company. He was succeeded by his eldest son, the second Baron, a Director of the CPR and of the Canadian Bank of Commerce. His son, the third Baron, was a businessman and was also active in the House of Lords. However, he lost his hereditary seat in parliament after the House of Lords Act 1999. Similar to the McGill Ghetto neighborhood, the Concordia University district between Atwater Street, Sherbrooke, and Rene Levesque Blvd is named Shaughnessy Village in his honour.
