Introduction
1. Annually, from the inauguration year of 2014, an appropriate token will be awarded to one Corporal who demonstrates a superb level of commitment and high level of excellence contributing to an overall positive effect on The Canadian Grenadier Guards or Regimental Family. This award is approved in its current form by Lieutenant-Colonel Commanding M. Canavan on 14 January 2014. The trophy is in commemoration to Cpl Chris Ambrose, a member of the Regiment who showed a high level of dedication throughout his service to The Canadian Grenadier Guards but who passed away in an automobile accident. The trophy will be permanently and prominently held on display at the Home station alongside the Canadian Grenadier Guards Leadership Trophy in Montreal, QC. The names of all recipients of this award are to be inscribed on the trophy and each is given a lasting token in recognition of their hard-work and dedication.
Eligibility
2. Eligibility for the Memorial Trophy is open to all qualified and active ranked Corporals of The Canadian Grenadier Guards, as well as to all Corporals of other trades/Branches serving within the unit during the assessment period. For the purposes of this award, those holding the appointment of Master Corporal are not eligible for assessment.
Criteria
3. The Memorial Trophy is awarded to an individual whose performance has demonstrated over the period of the assessment year outstanding commitment to the Regiment. Factors that should be considered in the selection include competence in their trade, confidence, courage, fitness, integrity, military achievement, CF recognition, self-improvement and personal advancement, and loyal and dedicated service to The Canadian Grenadier Guards and its members.
Procedures
4. The assessment period will be from 19 February to 18 February annually.
5. Within subunits of The Canadian Grenadier Guards, nominations may be made by any individual and forwarded through their applicable chain of command. Within other units (Ex. Ceremonial Guard, Detached Postings, etc), submission may be made through the most senior member of the Regiment in the region/area.
6. Nominations for the Award shall be made using the form attached in Annex A. The submission must all be accompanied by a separate Word document with a narrative composed for readers targeted towards readers who are unfamiliar with the member. The narrative must concentrate on highlighting the accomplishments, above average service or conspicuous merit displayed by the nominee. The narrative shall be a maximum of one page with a font of Times New Roman, 12 point. The use of acronyms and obscure terminology should be avoided. At a minimum, submissions must be signed by a WO or Lieutenant, but ideally a MWO or Major. All submissions are to be forwarded to the Lieutenant-Colonel Commanding or Regimental Sergeant Major no later than 18 Feb.
7. The Lieutenant-Colonel Commanding and Regimental Sergent Major will conduct the selection procedure in conjunction with any parties deemed relevant in order to select a primary and secondary winner (a control measure in order to mitigate for unforeseen events regarding the primary Corporal selected). These recommendations will then be submitted to the Captain Adjudant to ensure the proper inscription upon the trophy for the Regimental Ball and the creation of the memorial token for the chosen member.
8. The Lieutenant-Colonel Commanding and Regimental Sergent Major will announce the winner of the CYA at the Regimental Ball and be on hand to present the trophy and token to the receipient. If unavailable, senior CGG leadership may be delegated by the Lieutenant-Colonel Commanding and Regimental Sergent Major to present the award.Context
