British (BEF) War Department 1917/18 Kitchener pattern 5-Button tunic

Context

ABOUT THE RECIPIENT: Private 3080606 Wilfred Humphrey was born on 29 June, 1897 in Capelton Quebec and worked as a Miner (Essential Service) prior to being drafted at the age of twenty on 3rd January, 1918. He was tall for his age standing at 6 feet. Private Humphrey boarded HMS Saxonia on 18 February 1918 and arrived in the UK on 4 March 1918 where he was absorbed into the 23rd Reserve Battalion. He was reassigned and taken on strength (TOS) with the 87th Battalion (Canadian Grenadier Guards) on 20th of June 1918. He served at the front with CGG until gravely injured on 2nd September 1918 where he received gunshot wounds to his eft elbow and leg. He was invalided to the UK on 18th December 1918 for further treatment and recovery where he would have been issued this 87th Battalion (British War Department issued) tunic. Private Humphrey proceeded to Montreal on 5 June 1919 and was finally discharged from the CEF on 28 November 1919. He lived near Brockville, Ontario until his passing on 24 June 1949.
