Vimy Cross - 87th Battalion Canadian Grenadier Guards

Context

Our 257! - The number of our 87th Bn (CGG) soldiers commemorated on the Permanent Vimy Memorial and who fought and died during The Battle of Vimy Ridge. (lt must be noted that from our 87th Bn Duguid CGG History, from 9 April until 17 April, a total of 7 Officers and 148 ranks were killed during the battle and 4 Officers and 150 ranks wounded.) The story behind our 87th Bn “Vimy Cross” monument: 87th Battalion Vimy Cross CGG Armoury, Montreal Canada - Unveiled on 16 September 1917 by Major general Sir David Watson. The memorial was constructed by Pioneer Sgt C.G. Durrant and bears the names of 217 of the 87th Battalion who were killed or died of wounds during the period of February 1 to June 30, 1917. In 1922, the French government ceded a tract of land around the ridge to Canada. Canadian sculptor and architect Walter Seymour Allward was commissioned to design and build the Canadian National Vimy Memorial. It took 11 years to finish. The 87th Bn Cross was in the exact spot of the Current Day memorial and was boxed and shipped to Canada by the citizens of Vimy and returned to the Canadian Grenadier Guards Armoury where it rests in a place of honour on our main floor.
